A Country Lover’s Dream…

Highbullen sits in an Area of Great Landscape Value which also happens to be a UN World Heritage Area.  The Atlantic Coast is to the west, the Jurassic Coast to the east, Dartmoor National Park to the south and Exmoor National Park to the north.  It is an absolutely exceptional location and for any country lover Highbullen has to be the ideal choice throughout the year.

The natural world on your doorstep

Highbullen itself has a beautiful setting close to the famed Tarka Trail amongst the rolling Devon hills. We have our own Nature Reserve of Semi Natural Ancient Woodland and a beautiful stretch of the River Mole. View animals from our woodland hides and, if your luck is in, spot an otter on the river! The estate in excess of 200 acres has a truly wonderful range of flora and fauna.

Adventures and exploration with our Countryside Manager

C -taylor -sqChris Taylor joined Highbullen in 1993 and has been responsible for the creation of the 18 hole golf course and the management of the estate.  Having originally qualified with an honours degree in Agricultural Zoology, Chris's first job was as a farm manager of a 500 acre arable/stock farm in West Sussex.  Here he set about introducing wildlife conservation schemes well in advance of such initiatives becoming widely implemented.

In 1981 Chris moved to North Devon to run a livestock farm and pursue his interests in fishing, shooting, ornithology and self sufficient gardening.  In 1993 he joined Highbullen as Estate Manager.  The hotel and country club has considerable leisure and sporting facilities including salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing and a small driven game shoot.  Chris also manages both red and roe deer on the estate and organises stalking activities as well as shooting and fishing parties at locations throughout North Devon.

There is truly little that Chris doesn't know about the North Devon countryside. He is a committee member of a number of wildlife associations, has carried out research for the Environment Agency and has been a voluntary guide for the Exmoor National Park enthralling visitors with "deer search" walks during summer evenings.  He has converted numerous city dwellers into ardent lovers of the natural world.
